Frequently asked questions about Mindfulness and MBSR®
Find clear answers to the most common questions about the practice of mindfulness, the MBSR® program and our courses.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the ability to pay attention to the present moment intentionally and without judgment. It's a practice that helps us relate more wisely to our thoughts, emotions and physical sensations. Although it has roots in Eastern contemplative traditions, in programs like MBSR® it's taught in a completely secular, evidence-based way.
Is mindfulness a religion?
No. Although mindfulness has roots in Buddhist contemplative traditions, as taught in programs like MBSR® it's entirely secular and scientific. It doesn't require adopting any religious or spiritual belief. It's an evidence-based practice that anyone can use, regardless of their beliefs.
Is mindfulness the same as meditation?
Not exactly, although they're closely related. Mindfulness is a state of awareness that involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. Meditation is one of the main tools for developing this state, but mindfulness can also be practiced during any everyday activity: eating, walking, working, and so on.
Does mindfulness actually work?
Yes, there's a solid scientific foundation supporting the benefits of mindfulness. Thousands of studies have shown improvements in stress reduction, anxiety management, concentration, emotional regulation and overall wellbeing. Institutions like Harvard, Oxford and MIT have extensively researched its positive effects on the brain and health.
Do I need previous experience to practice mindfulness?
No, you don't need any previous experience. Mindfulness is a natural capacity that everyone has and that can be developed with practice. Courses like MBSR® are designed specifically for beginners and will guide you step by step. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to practice.
How much time do I need to practice each day?
To get started, even 5-10 minutes a day can be beneficial. Consistency matters most: it's better to practice 10 minutes every day than 30 minutes once a week. In structured programs like MBSR®, practicing 30-45 minutes a day is recommended for maximum benefit, but you can build up gradually.
How long does it take to notice any benefit?
Many people report benefits from the first few weeks of regular practice, such as greater calm, better concentration and a sense of increased clarity. However, deeper and more lasting changes usually appear after 8 weeks of consistent practice, the length of the standard MBSR® program.
Is it suitable if I have anxiety or chronic stress?
Mindfulness can be very beneficial for people with anxiety or chronic stress. In fact, the MBSR® program was originally designed to help people with these conditions. However, it doesn't replace professional medical or psychological treatment. If you have a clinical diagnosis, it's advisable to consult your healthcare professional before starting and let them know you're practicing mindfulness.
Can I practice mindfulness if I have chronic pain?
Yes — in fact, the MBSR® program was originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn for people with chronic pain at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Mindfulness doesn't eliminate physical pain, but it can significantly change your relationship with it, reducing the associated psychological suffering and improving quality of life.
What's the difference between MBSR and other relaxation techniques?
Unlike relaxation techniques that aim to produce a specific state of calm, MBSR® teaches you to relate differently to whatever experience arises, pleasant or unpleasant. It's not just about relaxing, but about developing equanimous awareness, acceptance, and skills to manage stress sustainably.
How long does the MBSR program last?
The MBSR® program runs for 8 weeks. It includes weekly sessions, one day of intensive practice, and daily home practice with guided audio of around 45 minutes. It's a meaningful commitment, but the results make it worthwhile.
Can I take the course at my own pace?
Yes. Our online courses are designed so you can move at your own pace, from wherever you are, with access to content and guided practices whenever you need them.
